What is Origami?

Origami is the art of paper folding. The goal is to sculpt a flat piece of paper through folding without cutting, gluing, or marking the paper.

We will be folding a paper lily, making a beautiful gift or even decoration.

All that is needed is a square piece of paper.

One Fold at a Time

  1. Start with folding the square paper in halves to create a plus and cross-shaped crease.
  2. Push the plus folds in to create a pyramid or a 4-pointed star shape.

3. Take one of the 4-pointed corners and push it towards the center.

4. Repeat step 3 for the rest of the corners until each side is a kite shape.

5. Choose one of the kite shapes and fold the short-length side along the centerfold and then unfold to create creases for a later step. Repeat this step for the other kite shapes.

6. Take the closed tip from the long side of the kite, bring it across to the opposite tip, and then unfold. This creates a crease in the middle for a later step. Each kite shape should have 3 creases at this point, forming a triangle.

7. Take the tip from the short-length side and fold it across, using the crease from step 7 to guide you. The sides will then fold in towards the center due to step 5’s creases.

8. Push those sides in and align them with the center, resulting in a smaller kite shape.

9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 for the other sides.

10. Once all sides are pressed into smaller kites, take the long side tip and fold it across and down to create petals. Repeating for the other 3 sides.

11. Take the short-length sides and fold them along the center. This holds the petals in place.

12. Take each tip from the opened side and curl them with a pencil or a similar tool to create the petals.
